Sen. Cornyn Introduces Legislation to Grant Fort Hood Victims Combatant Status

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today introduced in the Senate the Fort Hood Victims and Families Benefits Protection Act that would grant the victims of the Fort Hood attack and the families of the deceased victims the same legal status as if the attack had occurred in a combat zone, such as Iraq or Afghanistan. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, Sen. James Inhofe, R-Oklahoma, and Sen. Joseph Lieberman, ID-Connecticut, joined Sen. Cornyn in introducing this legislation, which is closely related to H.R. 4088, a House bill introduced on Tuesday by U.S. Rep. John Carter (R-TX-31).

WASHINGTON—The Minerals Management Service awarded a grant to the Texas General Land Office for the construction of artificial reefs in the Gulf of Mexico, a project included in the State’s Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP), U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced Tuesday. The grant for $1,516,075 will help to create new reef sites in areas that have no existing protection, such as 160-acre sites in Port Mansfield and Matagorda County. In addition, several existing artificial reefs will be enhanced with added materials, such as Basco’s and Salt.
