Cornyn Bill Honoring Victims of El Paso Shooting Signed Into Law
Designates Local Site as the El Paso Community Healing Garden National Memorial
WASHINGTON –U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) released the following statement after his El Paso Community Healing Garden National Memorial Act, which designates the Healing Garden commissioned in El Paso after the 2019 mass shooting as the El Paso Community Healing Garden National Memorial, was signed into law:
“Three years ago, the community of El Paso was forever changed as our neighbors and friends were viciously targeted and attacked,” said Sen. Cornyn. “We remember the 23 lives that were tragically lost that day, and I’m grateful this legislation will further honor the enduring strength of this vibrant community for generations to come.”
Background:
This legislation designates the Healing Garden in El Paso, Texas, which was commissioned by El Paso County, as the El Paso Community Healing Garden National Memorial in remembrance of the 23 victims of the mass shooting on August 3, 2019. This attack was the deadliest mass shooting against our Hispanic community in U.S. history. Motivated by white supremacy, a domestic terrorist drove over 10 hours and 600 miles from North Texas to a local Walmart and opened fire killing 23 people and injuring 20 more. El Paso County commissioned the Healing Garden to commemorate the lives lost in the attack and opened it on the two-year anniversary of the shooting, on August 3, 2021.
