Schumer wouldn't say if he would stay neutral or support Manchin and Sinema if they face primary challengers in the next cycle.
For the second time in three weeks, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) declined to back his two most critical members, Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), against the prospect of primary challenges:
TODAY: “Schumer wouldn’t say if he would stay neutral or support Manchin and Sinema if they face primary challengers in the next cycle.”
- SCHUMER: “I am focused on 2022, getting things done, and winning the election on 2022… I’m not at all focused on 2024 right now, and neither should anyone else be. That’s just how you lose in 2022.” (“How Schumer explains his Senate dilemma,” CNN, 2/02/2022)
LAST MONTH: “If this is a critical moment for democracy and a moral moment, would you support efforts to primary Sens. Manchin and Sinema?”
SCHUMER: “I’m not getting into the politics. This is a substantive serious issue.” (Burgess Everett, Tweet, 1/18/2022)
SEN. SANDERS AGREES… “Bernie Sanders says he would support primary challengers to Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema if they continue to oppose scrapping filibuster”
